Black, bright red and white. The Spanish artist Goya only needed a few colours to paint this masterly portrait of Don Ramón Satué, a judge in the supreme court in Madrid (as noted bottom left: 'Alcade de Corte'). The picture was probably not officially commissioned, but was painted out of friendship. Satué and Goya knew each other well: both were declared opponents of the regime of the Spanish king, Ferdinand VII. This portrait from 1832 - the only painting by Goya in the Rijksmuseum - is one of the highlights of the collection.  www.rijksmuseum.nl/
