A glass decorated with text, flowers and insects: a work of art was engraved by Anna Roemers Visscher - her signature is at the top of the stem. This type of glass is known as a römer. The name probably derives from the German word Römer, meaning Roman, and not from Anna Roemers's name. These glasses, with their beautiful large bowls, were often employed for diamond-point engraving: an illustration or inscription would be scratched into the glass with a diamond in pen-like holder.
