Cornelis Beets (1894)

Nicolaas Beets (1814-1903) was renowned as the author of 'Camera Obscura', which he had written under the pseudonym Hildebrand. The first edition appeared in 1839 while he was still a theology student in Leiden. At his death in 1903 the 22nd impression was being published. Apart from writing prose and poetry Beets was also a preacher, a combination which was not unusual in the nineteenth century. His friends, Hasebroek and Ten Kate were also poet-preachers. And his son Cornelis, apart from preaching, was also a sculptor and portrait painter.   www.rijskmuseum.nl/
